He uses small Lego bricks as garbage, and they pass through the auger into the truck's box with no problem. The arm extends from the truck's side and grabs the garbage can. The can is dragged over to the very side of the truck, then lifted and tilted over the opening. The lifting mechanism is very cleverly designed so that no 'garbage' will fall from the can until the lifting knob is slightly over-rotated, thereby opening the garbage can lid. Sounds complex, but it is well built, and has lasted us a year so far. The Bruder line is very tough, and the plastic is almost indestructible. The garbage man stops and talks to him. I (grandma) bought the side loader to match the "real one". The two year old figured out how the can attached, I couldn't!! It was expensive so I shared the cost with my son. My grandson already has the Brueder dump truck and it is played with daily so I knew even though it was expensive, it was durable and good value. He was so proud of his garbage truck with a "side claw". He took special care of this truck. Within approximately 6 weeks of receipt, the claw broke and can not be fixed. He was not mishandling the truck and is very sad that we can not fix it. For the money spent, the product should be more durable.
